2017 Convention Decisions

On the 12th of August, The Nationals WA held their annual Conference and Convention in Esperance on WA's south coast.

The Convention is the Party's biggest annual meeting, and decisions at the Convention become the policy of the Party.

Motions carried at the 2017 Convention:

1. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA reaffirm our commitment to Royalties for Regions.

2. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA call on the State Government to continue to fund the Bushfire Risk Mitigation Planning program and extend it to all local governments in Western Australia.

3. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA calls on the State Government to conduct an economic analysis on the impact of bauxite exports on the Western Australian alumina processing industry to ensure maximum benefit to the State from the use of our finite resources.

4. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA call on the Government to initiate an enquiry in to the decriminalisation of drug use and transferring administration from the criminal system to the health system.

5. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA support the introduction of a Point of Consumption Wagering Tax with all proceeds of the Tax being returned to the Western Australian Racing Industry.

6. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA affirms the principle of transparency in political advertising and calls for that principle to be extended beyond political parties and candidates to all operatives acting in the political sphere to influence the behaviour of voters.

7. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA demands of the current government clarification regarding the decision making process and its plans related to the rollout of NDIS or WANDIS without delay and that it communicates with its stakeholder base being people with disability, their families, networks, supports and agencies without further delay. 

8. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA supports decreasing the minimum age for Young Nationals membership from 18 years to 16 years of age. 

9. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA call on the State Government to bolster the Wheatbelt’s local Police with a dedicated traffic force to enforce the law and change attitudes toward road safety in the wheatbelt.

10. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA call on the State Government to review the processes surrounding WA Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, with a view to cutting associated red tape regarding local governments/contractors completing works.

11. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA support alternative land tenure models such as leasehold to improve housing affordability in Western Australia and calls upon the State Government to consider the merits of such a proposal.

12. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA calls on the State Government to retain the Director of Agricultural Education, the Agricultural Education Farms Provision Trust Fund and fully fund/support secondary agricultural education in Western Australia.

13. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA calls on the State government to maintain regional health services and infrastructure to ensure equitable access to health services, including hospitals, nursing posts, RFDS, TeleHealth and the RAC helicopter.

14. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA commits to the development of the extension of the Bibbulmun Track and the Munda Biddi Trail along the South Coast from Albany to Esperance.

15. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA condemns the Labor Government for prioritising City based arts and culture while withdrawing regional arts investment.

16. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA supports the continuation of Regional Development Commissions as independent Statutory Authorities.

17. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA calls on the State Government to support and fully implement the recommendations of the WA Regional Development Council Report “Ageing in the Bush”.

18. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA supports the Federal Government in cutting Penalty Rates for small business.

19. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA calls on the Government of Western Australia, to ensure that all Universities that deliver a University Course in Western Australia, be allowed and encouraged to advertise in the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) publication at an equitable cost.

20. That this State Convention of The Nationals WA reinforces their position and support for the Busselton Airport Project and its critical economic benefits to Busselton and the South West.
