Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies MLA has welcomed the announcement that a new Animal Studies course will be available at Muresk in 2017.

Ms Davies said the six-month, full-time course would be delivered by Central Regional TAFE, on-site at Northam’s Muresk Institute campus.

“This course would suit anyone with a passion for animals or anyone interested in working with large farm animals,” she said.

Im pleased to see new courses like this become available to locals, as these types of courses help strengthen WA’s thriving agricultural industry.”

Ms Davies said it was thanks to investment from Royalties for Regions(RfR) that the Muresk Institute had a bright future catering to the modern needs of the agricultural sector.

Royalties for Regions has contributed more than $20 million to the Muresk Institute to support agricultural skills development and strengthen WA’s agrifood industry,” she said.

The new local Animal Studies course will provide students with a pathway to Certificate III in Agriculture and the Certificate IV Vet nursing course.

Member for the Agricultural Region Hon Martin Aldridge MLC said the new local course would provide participants with many new skills and could lead to some excellent careers.

“Participants will learn fundamental animal care and handling methods, ways to cater for their nutritional needs, animal health care and basic first aid and broader attributes such as developing teamwork, communication and problem solving skills,” Mr Aldridge said.

“People who complete this new course will have access to a wide range of job opportunities such as animal handler, animal shelter worker, animal care attendant or pet shop employee.”

Ms Davies said Muresk had been providing a quality education and training experience for 90 years, and The Nationals in Government had worked hard to ensure it had a sustainable future.

“That’s nearly a century of providing quality education to our future leaders of the agricultural industry in Western Australia,” she said.
