98 new units for seniors in the heart of Mandurah

  • 98 units for seniors in the Peel region, including 24 under the Liberal National Government's $560 million Social Housing Investment Package
  • Units ready for occupancy by June 2017
  • Regional Cabinet meeting to be held in Mandurah on April 4 

The Peel region will receive nearly 100 additional units for seniors as part of an ongoing community housing project delivered by the State Government and Bethanie Housing.

Housing Minister Colin Holt today announced 24 of the 98 units at Peel II, the final stage of the Bethanie Peel development in Coodanup, would be purchased as part of the $560 million Social Housing Investment Package announced in the 2015-16 State Budget.  The remaining 74 units would be used to target the public housing waitlist or seniors in the public housing system.

Mr Holt, who will be in Mandurah on April 4 as part of Regional Cabinet, said the Liberal National Government was committed to providing affordable, age-friendly accommodation which allowed seniors to continue living in their community of choice.

"With an ageing population, the Government faces the challenge of accommodating long-term social housing tenants who need age-appropriate housing," he said.

"This project means seniors in the Peel region will not have to uproot and move closer to Perth."

The Housing Authority partnered with Bethanie previously, providing funds for the construction of Bethanie's 96-unit 'Peel I' development in 2011 and also a 104-unit development in Dalyellup.

"Peel II will provide the opportunity for tenants to move out of under-occupied social housing into secure, supported accommodation that better suits their needs," Mr Holt said.

"There are Peel seniors on the priority waitlist and this project will go some way to addressing that."

Bethanie Peel is conveniently situated near the Mandurah Forum Shopping Centre and Mandurah train station.

The Minister said partnerships with community organisations were a key part of providing accommodation for seniors.

The Social Housing Investment Package will halve the priority waitlist for vulnerable seniors and families with children by June 30, 2017.
