Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman today congratulated recipients of the 2011 AgLinkEd scholarships at the Wagin Woolorama.
Mr Redman presented the scholarships to Katelyn Weinert, from the Denmark campus of the Western Australian College of Agriculture, and Hannah-Jane Armstrong, of the Harvey campus.
“Congratulations to both students in their achievements to date and I wish them the best for their future endeavours in the agriculture and food sector,” he said.
“The State Government is committed to encouraging students to pursue careers in agriculture and the AgLinkEd project is an example of this.”
The scholarships are awarded to Year 11 agricultural college students who demonstrate a passion and aptitude in agriculture, and commitment to a career in the industry. The students receive $1,000 towards their Year 12 school fees.
Katelyn Weinert is a student councillor and a member of the college Farm Skills team, and has represented Denmark at the Perth Royal Show and Wagin Woolorama. Her experiences include cattle mustering in the Kimberley region through to crop harvesting on the South Coast.
Hannah-Jane Armstrong has competed in livestock handling and judging at Wagin Woolorama, the Perth Royal Show, and Busselton and Brunswick district shows. She has also worked in vineyards, shearing sheds and in the dairy industry. Hannah hopes to attend university next year, participate in an overseas rural exchange program and pursue a career in agriculture.
The Minister said AgLinkEd - part of the Department of Agriculture and Food’s education initiative - also provided technical and professional support to educators and trainers across a range of agricultural disciplines.
“There has been a great response to AgLinkEd from the teaching fraternity since it started in July 2010,” he said.
“The AgLinkEd co-ordinators have been working closely with teachers and education providers to tailor their service to the needs of the clients - be it professional development training sessions; resource kits; careers days; networking opportunities; and access to department facilities and expertise.”
