Pedestrians and cyclists in the electorate of Moore will be able to enjoy better cycling facilities after the Liberal-National State Government awarded $58,997 in grants for cycling infrastructure projects, under the Bicycle Network Program.

Member for Moore, Hon Grant Woodhams MLA welcomed the awarding of grants to further enhance the areas bicycle infrastructure. “Not only is cycling a green alternative to driving a car, it is also good for you,” Mr Woodhams said. "Western Australian is recognised for its world-class cycling facilities and these grants will help further our attractive cycling and pedestrian infrastructure for residents and tourists alike”.

Mr Woodhams said that grants had been awarded to a number of local governments in the area for a variety of projects.

Recipients and projects include: $12,500 to the Shire of Chittering for the preparation of a local Bike Plan for Bindoon and Muchea; $23,400 for the Shire of Irwin to construct a 408m concrete new shared path along Picketing Drive, Dongara from Welldeck Street to existing path on Pickering Drive; $12,350 to the Shire of Mullewa to construct a 185m concrete new shared path along Jose Street, Mullewa from Molster Street to Elder Street; $10,747 to the Shire of Perenjori to construct a 139m concrete new shared path along Hesford Street, Perenjori from Livingstone Street to John Street.

Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said that the grants scheme offers funding on a 'dollar for dollar basis' with local government for the planning and development of cycling infrastructure, facilities, planning and promotion.

“The Bicycle Network Program helps reduce congestion on our roads and improve the health and wellbeing of the community," Mr O'Brien said. In 2009, 76 bicycle projects across WA received grant funding totalling around $1.75million.
