Efforts to save the Carnarvon Racing Club’s 2011 racing season have been boosted by the announcement of emergency funding to help repair the flood-damaged course.

Racing and Gaming Minister Terry Waldron announced yesterday in State Parliament an emergency grant of $34,790 from the Government’s Racecourse Infrastructure Grants Program to assist with repair work.

“This money will be advanced as a matter of priority,” Mr Waldron said.

“The overall cost of the repair job will be in the vicinity of $64,000 and the balance will be met by the club itself, generous donations from club supporters and the Shire of Carnarvon, which will donate materials.

“I understand that repair work is scheduled to start this weekend with the aim of the track being ready for the season’s opening race meeting on April 30.”

The recent floods in Carnarvon caused major damage to community infrastructure, including the racecourse and community sporting facilities.

The Minister said bringing recreation facilities back on line was an important part of the recovery process after a natural disaster, particularly a disaster of the size experienced by Carnarvon residents.

“In January, I visited Carnarvon with the North West MLA Vince Catania to inspect the damage that had been caused to the town’s racing and sporting infrastructure,” he said.

“It is my intention to utilise every mechanism available to me within my portfolio to support the Carnarvon community through their rebuilding process.”
