Member for the South West Hon. Colin Holt has welcomed the Minister for Regional Development, Brendon Grylls’ announcement that Royalties for Regions has committed to fund the construction of two new telecommunication base stations in the Blackwood Valley. The towers will be built at Balingup and Quongup and will provide good mobile phone coverage in the valley from Nannup to Balingup

"The Shire of Donnybrook-Bailingup and the Bailingup community have been pushing hard for these towers to be built. I have made a number of representations to the Minister’s Office on their behalf to keep this issue on the agenda and it is very pleasing to see this commitment," said Mr Holt.

"We all know how important communication is in emergency situations and with these two towers everyone who lives or visits that area will be better placed to respond to bushfires or other emergencies. Since making the announcement, Minister Grylls has already received thankyous from the local community."

"Now that the funding has come through, I am optimistic that it won’t be too long before construction on the base stations can start" said Mr Holt.
Mr Holt also said that this funding shows that the Liberal-National Government is interested in regional telecommunications and that he is hopeful that other black spots in the South West will also come online.
