Premier Colin Barnett today officially opened the new $7.253million aquatic facilities in the Shire of Murray.
The new aquatic facilities at the Murray Leisure Centre boast a 25 metre, eight lane pool, a children's leisure pool and the region’s first hydrotherapy pool.
Mr Barnett said recreational facilities were vital to rural communities and encouraged local residents to be active and healthy.
“The State Government is committed to the development of regional infrastructure and delivering quality facilities for all West Australians,” he said.
“Murray is one of the fastest growing regions and it’s well recognised that recreational facilities are essential to the health and wellbeing of growing communities.”
The Premier said the State Government had provided $2.92million towards the project, with the Federal Government contributing $1.22milllion.
The Shire of Murray provided $2million and the local community raised a further $94,000. Mr Barnett also thanked Alcoa for their $1million contribution and Alinta for providing $350,000 worth of gas over 10 years.
“Funding this aquatic centre was one of our pre-election promises, so it’s fantastic for me to be here today to officially open the facility,” the Premier said.
“I’d like to congratulate all involved. It has been a team effort between the shire, State Government, the community and businesses from the region.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the work of the local member for Murray-Wellington Murray Cowper for his work on behalf of the community and within Government to achieve this outcome.”
Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Country Local Government Fund (CLGF) allocation of $834,000 contributed to the $1.464million cost of covering and enclosing the swimming pool.
“These facilitieswill serve the people of Murray and the Peel region for generations to come,” Mr Waldron said.
“The CLGF is another example of Royalties for Regions providing funds for developing new quality facilities for regional communities.”
