Crime pays in the South West, Holt

Author: Colin Holt
Published on: 12-May-2011

Nationals’ member for the South West Region Hon. Colin Holt has welcomed the recent announcement by Attorney General Christian Porter which has seen close to four million  dollars distributed throughout the State through the criminal property confiscation grants program.

The program directs money and other assets obtained illegally by criminals back into the community.

Reforms made to the program under the Liberal-National Government have enabled organisations to now receive up to $200,000 for a project, as long as they contribute 50 per cent of the project in cash or in-kind services.

Mr Holt welcomed a number of projects in the South West gaining much needed support including the ‘Graffurveillance Project’ run through the Shire of Capel which received $11,000 in support.

“Graffiti on public and community buildings and assets has been a growing program in Capel which has been raised with me on numerous occasions. It is fantastic that the confiscation grants program will be able to complement other strategies the Shire has in place,” said Mr Holt.

“The program links in with the Shires comprehensive Graffiti Management Plan and will include education programs with local schools, art projects and other activities with the community and local business in the Shire of Capel.”

Other projects to gain support through this round of grants were the ‘Child Safety South West Project’ which aims to provide a more comprehensive approach to child safety issues. The program is to complement the ‘Stronger Noongar Koolangkas Project’.

The Child Safety South West Project is being delivered through the workings of 7 local governments in the South West. The criminal confiscation grants program supported this project with $185,000 support.

The funding guidelines also now allow for offender programs designed to reduce criminal behaviour in young people to receive funding, even if the youths taking part have already been in contact with the criminal justice system.

The Attorney General also announced that funding for the next round of grants would open today and close at 5pm on Friday, July 8.

As with the last round, the Department of the Attorney General will hold information sessions for interested parties living in metropolitan and regional area so they can get help and advice about putting together their applications.
