Colin Holt today welcomed the announcement by Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien that applications are open to the Consumer Advisory Committee for Western Australia and encouraged people in the South West Region to put their hand up and apply.

“A dedicated Consumer Advisory Committee will ensure that consumer viewpoints are adequately represented during the development and administration of Western Australian consumer laws,” Mr Holt said.

“The Committee will meet four or five times a year and provide guidance on the activities of Consumer Protection.

“It will also provide its views to the Minister and the Commissioner for Consumer Protection, on current or emerging consumer issues, or matters referred to the Committee.”

Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien urged Western Australians who are passionate about consumer issues and consider themselves to be suitable candidates to put their names forward and encouraged people from regional WA to apply.

“We will be looking to appoint members to the Consumer Advisory Committee who reflect WA’s diverse population,” he said.

Mr Holt said the Committee is part of a reform of licensing boards in the Consumer Protection portfolio where it has replaced a number of individual boards.

The closing date for expressions of interest in becoming a member of the Consumer Advisory Committee is 4 June 2011.
