The Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) High Performance Service Centre is a step closer with Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron’s announcement of $2million for planning of the centre.
The planning will include the best way for WAIS to provide:
· water based recovery areas
· indoor multi-purpose training facilities
· strength and conditioning rooms
· high performance sport research equipment
· consultation areas for sports people to consult with their coaches, nutritionists and medical advisers.
Mr Waldron said the State Government was determined to make the WA Sports Park at Mount Claremont a sporting precinct of regional, national and international significance.
“We have already completed the WA Athletics Stadium and the WA Basketball Centre at Mount Claremont,” he said.
“If we add the new rugby headquarters, Challenge Stadium, The University of WA’s artificial hockey field and tennis courts and the nearby netball centre we will be close to achieving this vision.
“A key piece of the jigsaw pulling all this together is the High Performance Service Centre, which will serve athletes from a range of disciplines practised on the precinct.”
WAIS CEO Steve Lawrence was pleased the State Government had recognised the clear need for a new facility for WA’s high performance athletes.
“This announcement is the first step to ensuring WA’s athletes can continue to compete with the world’s best at the 2014 Commonwealth and 2016 Olympic Games,” Mr Lawrence said.
“We look forward to now undertaking the detailed planning so the WAIS High Performance Service Centre can play its role as the keystone facility within the WA Sports Park precinct.”
