A sensory playground, maritime display and upgrades to a local fire brigade are some of the winners in the final round of the Magellan Community Fund recognised at a breakfast in Esperance today.
Member for Mining and Pastoral Hon Wendy Duncan MLC congratulated the successful applicants and acknowledged the considerable time and effort put in by the groups to prepare their funding applications.
“Most of the people working in these groups are volunteers and it is a great credit to them that they work so hard to provide services to our community,” Ms Duncan said.
“The funding from Magellan Metals has provided benefits for the Esperance community allowing for a number of sustainable projects which will give long-term benefits.
“I am particularly looking forward to seeing the sensory playground being built as it will give a new dimension to play and learning for our children, while offering opportunities for a number of skilled people in the community”.
Ms Duncan thanked the Esperance Shire for administering the fund, and the local committee who selected the projects to be funded.
She said that while it was good news that community groups were receiving much needed support, we must not forget that the funds are part of the response to the lead contamination of the Esperance community.
“We must always remain committed to ensuring the safety of the people and the environment are paramount in everything we do,” Ms Duncan said.
Since 2009, about $930,000 of the $1 million offered under the Magellan Community
Fund has been committed to 31 community projects and initiatives.
Today, Magellan Metals announced a donation of about $70,000 from the community fund to the Shire of Esperance for the foreshore development project.
