Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies has joined the fight against heart disease and urged everyone in regional WA to support the Heart Foundation’s Go Red for Women campaign.
Ms Davies said there was a lack of awareness about the impact of heart disease on women in the community.
“Many women think heart disease only affects older men, but it is actually the number one killer of Australian women,” Ms Davies said.
“That’s why I’m supporting the National Heart Foundation of Australia’s Go Red for Women campaign to raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of Australian women.
“While many women are well aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, research conducted by the Australian Heart Foundation has shown there are often significant barriers.”
The Heart Foundation will be conducting a free, 10-week Healthy Heart Challenge to help Australian women make lifestyle changes to improve their heart health and reduce their risk of developing heart disease.
“I’ll be doing the challenge and encourage everyone in regional WA to join me in improving their health.”
Participants are asked to select one of six key goals:
· Be active everyday
· Improve everyday nutrition
· Increase knowledge of heart health
· Quit smoking
· Lower high blood pressure
· Lower high cholesterol levels.
“My goal will be to improve everyday nutrition but everyone should choose the one that suits them best and they’ll have my support!”
The Health Heart Challenge started on 1 June 2011, as part of the launch of Go Red for Women month.
