Ms Davies said this workshop was a great opportunity to look at how mentoring and communication with young people could be improved in regional areas. 

 

“Young people are an important part of our regional communities and we need to make sure they have good role models and mentors,” Ms Davies said.

 

“All young people should have access to the resources, including mentors and good advice, that they need to make decisions about their future.

 

“Mentoring is essential to help young people to achieve well at school and transition to post school education, training and employment.”

 

The Department for Communities is conducting consultations across WA to design and implement mentoring programs in Western Australia.

 

“It’s important for service providers and people in regional WA to participate in these consultations, because young people in regional areas face unique challenges and these need to be factored into any future systems.

 

“I would encourage any interested youth organisations and practitioners to contact the Australian Youth Mentoring Network to see how they can contribute.”

 

The workshop was hosted by the Department for Communities and the Australian Youth Mentoring Network, as part of the State and Federal Government’s National Partnership on Youth Attainment and Transitions.

 

This partnership aims to increase the educational engagement and attainment of young people and to improve transition to post school education, training and employment through immediate action supported by broader long term reform.
