Minister for Agriculture, the Hon Terry Redman MLA, will be in Broome today to discuss the suspension of live export cattle to Indonesia with the pastoral industry.
Joining him will be local Member for the Mining & Pastoral Region, the Hon Wendy Duncan MLC.
Ms Duncan said that the blanket ban imposed by the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has already had crushing affects on individuals, families and businesses in the North West, and that the meeting today was to identify the immediate, mid-term and longer term issues the industry is struggling with and will continue to struggle with.
It will also cover potential solutions and strategies to address the key issues.
Ms Duncan said that given the circumstances, the forum was urgently required.
“The recent announcement that live cattle export was to cease immediately has left the industry in limbo. Our primary producers and the industry as a whole are struggling with uncertainty and dread as to what their futures hold. Action needs to be taken to ensure the livelihood and longevity of the industry and its people, “said Ms Duncan.
Ms Duncan encouraged Pastoralists and other key stakeholders in the industry who were unavailable to attend the meeting today to make contact with her Broome office on 9192 7708 to put forward their concerns.
