Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies today welcomed funding for a program that helps women in Geraldton and the Mid West to manage the after-effects of breast cancer surgery.
Ms Davies said the State Government had committed more than $192,000 to fund the Encore program, run by the Young Women’s Christian Association.
“This program has been providing vital services to women recovering from breast cancer for more than 20 years,” Ms Davies said.
“Often women in regional areas don’t get the same access to these health services, so it is great to see funding for this program extended to Geraldton.
“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Australian women – it affects people in our families, friendship circles and communities – so anything that can help the recovery process is invaluable.”
The YWCA Encore is a eight week program of specially designed gentle exercise, relaxation, support and information for women who have experienced breast cancer at any time in their life.
The course helps women with the after-effects of breast cancer surgery and treatment, helping to restore strength, mobility and flexibility, confidence and general wellbeing.
“This program also gives women who have had breast cancer the chance to meet others people who have similar experiences.
“Sharing information and experiences with others is an important part of the recovery process and a key part of this program.”
Participants require a medical referral, but the program is free to any woman who has undergone breast cancer surgery regardless of when their procedure took place.
The new arrangement takes effect from 1 July 2011, with the first sessions set to commence early next year.
