Mandurah Ocean Marina scoops another international award, Grylls

The Mandurah Ocean Marina has confirmed its reputation as a world-class facility by winning the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) Award for Excellence: Asia Pacific competition.

The award was presented to State Government-agency LandCorp as the marina’s developer at a gala dinner last night (June 22) as part of the Real Estate Investment World Asia 2011 Conference in Singapore.

This latest award win comes after the $80million Mandurah Ocean Marina won the internationally prestigious 2011 PIANC Marina Excellence Design Jack Nichol Award in May.

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the marina had won more than 14 significant awards, adding further weight to its international reputation.

“Through this project, Mandurah and Western Australia as a whole have been gifted with a remarkable marina which is setting new benchmarks on the global stage,” Mr Grylls said.

The Minister said the marina project transformed a strip of under-utilised and, in some areas, derelict land into Australia’s first fully integrated marina, seamlessly combining maritime, residential, commercial, tourism and recreational areas.

Mr Grylls said the meticulous attention to community and environmental concerns, as well as public-private sector collaborations, were crucial elements to how the marina’s development was undertaken.

“Environmental, engineering and logistical challenges included the dewatering of the north and south harbour basins, the creation of a protected nesting ground of migratory fairy terns (seabirds) and relocation of marine life during the dewatering operation.

“Collaboration between LandCorp, the City of Mandurah, the Department of Planning and the Peel Development Commission also contributed to the success of this priority State Government project.” Mr Grylls said.
