The Shire of Carnarvon will take its first step in delivering a new vision for the town, after receiving $8million in funding through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Gascoyne Revitalisation Plan initiative.

The revitalisation of the Robinson Street business, retail and cultural precinct, and its surrounds, has been identified by the shire and the community of Carnarvon as a project that will be pivotal in increasing commercial development and opportunities in the CBD.

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the project, which is fully funded by Royalties for Regions, will see Robinson Street upgraded through the redesign of existing streetscapes and landscapes.

“The upgrades include enhancements to Robinson Street, improved lighting, and better bicycle and pedestrian access,” Mr Grylls said.

“Construction will also commence on replacing 100m of the fascine wall north of Robinson Street, to safeguard the town from flood risk.”

North West MLA Vince Catania said changes will attract new residents and cater for tourists coming to the region for the warm climate and pristine marine environments.

Mr Catania said Carnarvon is the most significant urban settlement in the Gascoyne region, providing residential and holiday accommodation, recreational boating facilities, local and tourism services.

The allocation of Royalties for Regions funds to upgrade Robinson Street are a direct result of the Gascoyne Development Commission and local government working together to meet the needs of the community.

The Gascoyne Revitalisation Plan initiative will see the region receive a total of $150million in Royalties for Regions funding over the next five years.
