The J D Hardie Youth Centre in South Hedland will officially reopen today after a $9.55 million redevelopment project which has seen the centre transformed.

Member for Mining & Pastoral Region, the Hon Wendy Duncan MLC, said that the redevelopment had seen the addition of offices, meeting rooms and a multi-purpose space, together with a significant upgrade of the existing building.

“The new centre will be utilised for youth to engage with technology, performing arts, dance and visual arts and will provide a base for local government, not-for-profit organisations and allied community groups to meet and engage in services and activities”, said Ms Duncan.

“I would like to congratulate the Town of Port Hedland and its people in identifying this project as being of major importance to their region.”

“They now have a modern first-class facility, representing the most significant investment in youth facilities and services in the Town’s history.”

Ms Duncan also thanked BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Department of Housing’s South Hedland New Living Project, Newcrest Mining and the Town of Port Hedland for their significant contribution of funds towards the project.

With Royalties for Regions leading the way the J D Hardie Youth Centre will now provide a range of youth services and activities to engage youth in a safe, supportive and fun environment.

Ms Duncan said that she was proud to see funds created from the Royalties for Regions program being invested in projects addressing youth services in the regions.
