Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies has congratulated year 5 students at Kalbarri District High School for their efforts in winning the school’s National Whale Day competition.
Ms Davies announced the winner last Friday and presented the class with a whale watching tour, the prize donated by local business Reef Walker charter tours.
“Whale watching is an important part of Kalbarri’s tourism industry and the school’s efforts as part of National Whale Day help to promote and protect this important tourist business,” Ms Davies said.
“Protecting the environment also helps the local economy, by ensuring the attractions that people want to come and see still exist.
“I was very impressed by the close-knit community, as highlighted by Ilse and Rob Curic, local business owners donating the great prize of a whale watching tour.”
Ms Davies also visited a number of Royalties for Regions projects in Kalbarri, including the Volunteer Marine Rescue boat and lifter, the new St John’s Ambulance Sub Centre and the Fire and Emergency Services and State Emergency Services cliff rescue training tower.
“These projects in Kalbarri are great examples of how Royalties for Regions allows regional communities to prioritise what their town needs most and provide the resources to enable local decision making.
“I was overwhelmed by the ‘can-do’ attitude of the Kalbarri community and their efforts to make Kalbarri a great place to live, work, visit and invest.
“Like all regional communities, volunteers play a vital role in providing services in Kalbarri and I would like to congratulate these volunteers on the amazing work they do.”
