Record funding has been provided for improvements at 29 airports across the State through the 2011-12 round of the Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS).

Transport Minister Troy Buswell said $8.4million RADS funding - comprising $6.4million from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program and $2million from the Department of Transport - would significantly improve services.

“This year, 29 regional airports will share $8.4million for infrastructure upgrades and maintenance programs to provide improved access for communities, safer emergency evacuations and greater tourism opportunities,” Mr Buswell said.

Since RADS started in 1997, more than $34million has been committed to regional aviation infrastructure, with a total project value of more than $86million.

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said Royalties for Regions provided RADS with a significant boost, enabling a wider scope of projects.

“The funding will ensure our regional airports continue to play a vital part in supporting communities, business and tourism across the State,” Mr Grylls said.

Major 2011-12 grants included $1.28million for passenger security screening facilities and an apron extension at Esperance; and $1.25million for a review of the airport master plan and building passenger security screening facilities at Albany.
