The North-West region has received funding under Eventscorp’s $600,000 Regional Events Scheme (RES), local member Vince Catania said today.
Mr Catania said the funding would provide a boost for local tourism thanks to the doubling of the RES funding to $600,000.
The additional $300,000 had been allocated from the Liberal-National Government’s Royalties for Regions fund.
“The Regional Events Scheme was designed to support a wide range of events in country areas to attract visitors, particularly outside traditional peak holiday periods,” Mr Catania said.
“These events contribute to the State’s diverse and varied events calendar and will help to raise the profile of a region through media coverage.”
Mr Catania thanked Tourism Minister, Dr Kim Hames and Minister for Regional Development, Brendon Grylls, for their ongoing commitment to attracting events to the region.
“Thanks to the extra funding, Eventscorp, a division of Tourism Western Australia, will be able to support 39 events in regional areas in 2011-12, including 20 that are receiving support for the first time,” Mr Catania said.
He said 21 more events would receive funding this financial year compared to last year.
New events include the Cue Outback Triathlon, which is believed to be the only triathlon to hold the swim leg in an old mining pit.
The Karratha Community Celebration has received funding under RES for the first time.
Events funded in the North-West include:
Cue Outback Triathlon – September 10, 2011
Karratha Community Celebration – September 18, 2011
Kickstartsers Gascoyne Dash – October 27-30, 2011
Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival – Last weekend in May, 2012
