The Member for North West, Vincent Catania said today that safety at the intersection of North West Coastal Highway and Speedway Road in Carnarvon will be upgraded under the latest round of State Black Spot funding.

Mr Catania said that $386000 had been allocated under the State Black Spot Program to upgrade the intersection.
“The works will provide for a construction of a left turn lane into Speedway Road, improved signage, extend the culvert and upgrade the lighting at the intersection” Vince Catania said. The project was part funded in 2010/11 and the latest funding will ensure that this stage of the project can be commenced in the 2011/12 financial year by Main Roads.
In announcing the 2011/12 State Black Spot Program on Thursday, Transport Minister Troy Buswell saidthe program had so far delivered more than $250million in community benefits since its inception in 2000 under the Court Government.
“Again, the State Government has reinforced its commitment to improving road safety by allocating $20million to this year’s program,” Vince Catania said.
“The program is delivered in partnership with local government, which contributes another $5million each year.
“There is no doubt the program is effectively addressing road safety at a grass roots level.
Vince Catania said that other projects in the Gascoyne under the 2011/12 State Black Spot Program were:
In Carnarvon $66059 towards a $99088 project by the Shire of Carnarvon to realign the Red Bluff Road approach to allow for a 90 degree T junction with Quobba Gnaraloo Road and install advanced signs.
In Exmouth $115,387 towards a $173080 Shire of Exmouth Project has been allocated towards installing street lighting and improving skid resistance on Murat Road.
