Work is well under way on the $170.4million Albany Health Campus, the biggest public country hospital development ever undertaken in Western Australia.

Health Minister Kim Hames said, once completed, the new Albany Health Campus would service about 55,000 patients each year.

“Patients will have access to an improved and expanded range of services, including a bigger emergency department, more mental health beds, expanded renal dialysis capability, expanded cancer services, a new surgical centre and upgraded obstetric and birthing suites,” Dr Hames said.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today visited the site to check on progress and meet with developers from the John Holland Group.

“Construction of the Albany Health Campus is being done in stages to ensure every effort is being made to minimise disruption and inconvenience to patients, staff and visitors,” Mr Grylls said.

“This is a very important development for the Great Southern region and WA.”

Dr Hames said certain services at the existing Albany Hospital had already been temporarily relocated to minimise disruption during construction.

The Albany Health Campus is funded collaboratively by the State Government (Department of Health $105.1million; Royalties for Regions $60.9million) and the Federal Government ($4.4million).

Works on the campus began in January 2011, and is on target for completion and opening in early 2013.
