Eastern Breakwater Precinct to receive makeover, Grylls

Geraldton residents will reap the benefits of improved recreational facilities at the Geraldton foreshore after receiving $2.2million in State Government Royalties for Regions funding for the Eastern Breakwater Precinct.

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls today announced Royalties for Regions support for the $4.25million precinct - a collaborative project between the Geraldton Port Authority and the City of Greater Geraldton.

The Midwest Development Commission has also worked very closely with the city in facilitating funding towards the foreshore project over the past eight years.

“The improved facilities will see the installation of parklands, boardwalks and jetties in a previously isolated semi-industrial and brown-field site, making it a vibrant precinct linking nearby neighbourhoods to other parts of the successful Geraldton foreshore development,” Mr Grylls said.

“As well as facilitating recreational activities, the addition will continue to generate social and economic opportunities for the area.”

The Minister said expanding the waterfront recreation space would reduce pressure on existing social amenities and provide better connection to West End and Point Moore businesses.

“The foreshore upgrade will further strengthen Geraldton as the area already attracts tourists travelling by land and sea,” he said.

Community engagement by the City of Greater Geraldton has always been a feature of designing the foreshore, with public meetings, community submissions and surveys all used to encourage community input.

This project is in addition to the $220million in Royalties for Regions funding announced in the 2011-12 State Budget over the next four years towards the Mid West Investment Plan.
