Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today launched the first SuperTowns community forum due to be held in each of the nine endorsed towns in regional Western Australia.

Mr Grylls was in Collie which would this year share in $85.5million of Royalties for Regions SuperTowns funding.

“With WA’s population predicted to double in the next 30-40 years, SuperTowns will help centres such as Collie prepare and plan for increased amenity and services to cater for population expansion and economic growth,” he said.

“Regional Western Australia has fantastic opportunities for job creation and lifestyle choices. For the first time, the State Government has provided funding and a real desire to assist regional communities unlock their potential.”

The Minister said the SuperTowns forums were the first step in the process for residents to develop their own identity and vision.

“The community has been given the opportunity to decide what makes Collie that special place and identify features to build on these unique attributes,” he said.

A total of $5.5million has been allocated in 2010-11 through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program for the development of SuperTowns Growth Plans which will be consistent with the Western Australian Planning Commission’s State and regional planning frameworks

An additional $80million has been allocated to help kick-start transformational SuperTowns projects.

The other towns selected to take part in the SuperTowns initiative are Katanning, Esperance, Northam, Jurien Bay, Morawa, Boddington, Manjimup and Margaret River.

The next SuperTowns community forum will be held at Northam on August 12.
