The Hon Wendy Duncan MLC, Member for Mining and Pastoral Region has today acknowledged the integral role that employers from across the State play in supporting emergency service volunteers.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) last night held their Volunteer Employer Recognition Program (VERP) awards in Perth which celebrate employers’ commitment to releasing staff during work hours to enable them to volunteer in an emergency.

Ms Duncan said that roughly 70 employers were recognised at the awards last night, and included employers from Hopetoun, Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Laverton in three categories which included:-

Gold Award Winners
Barrick Australia Pacific Granny Smith Mine, Laverton

Silver Award Winners
Goldline Distributors, Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Master Builders Association, Kalgoorlie-Boulder
WA Country Health Service, Kalgoorlie-Boulder
MS Boothey, Hopetoun

Bronze Award Winners
John Brouwer Carpentry, Hopetoun

“I would like to thank these employers and their staff for the great contribution they make towards ensuring the safety and wellbeing of residents and property in emergency situations such as cyclones, bushfires and floods.”

“Their ongoing commitment and support to their employees who they allow to attend both training and emergency situations in working hours is commendable,” said Ms Duncan.

Many of the recipients were also commended for providing financial assistance through
monetary donations and the use of facilities, furniture or equipment.

Ms Duncan was delighted that more than half of the recipients at last night’s awards
were from regional Western Australia, highlighting the resilience and spirit of
community that the regions possess.

The VERP awards come on the back of the announcement of a new purpose-built, secure radio communications network to be used by the WA Police, Department of Corrective Services and the Fire and Emergency Services Authority which was funded with $94.5 million of Royalties for Regions money.
