Member for Mining and Pastoral Region, Hon Wendy Duncan, has today welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the State’s law enforcement and public safety agencies.
The MOU will provide for the implementation of a new communications network for police and emergency services in regional Western Australia, replacing the Police Regional Radio Network.
Ms Duncan said that the Pilbara along with Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Albany and Geraldton will be the first major regions to gain access to the Royalties for Regions funded network, with Motorola being awarded the contract to implement the network to these areas.
“A total of $94.5 million was funded through the successful Royalties for Regions program for the new purpose-built, secure radio communications network,” said Ms Duncan.
“It is excellent to see Royalties for Regions funding enhancing vital services to vital agencies across regional Western Australia.”
Standardised terminal equipment will be used by the WA Police, Department of Corrective Services (DCS) and the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) with the WA Police and DCS already receiving the new equipment and beginning programming.
Ms Duncan said that the project also caters for future expansion, allowing eventual
access for other agencies.
“Regional areas will significantly benefit from the modern and effective radio
network through providing a more informed, responsive and co-ordinated
service,” said Ms Duncan.
