Drivers on the Great Eastern Highway will be among those to benefit from a State Government program aimed at reducing road safety risks on WA’s extensive network of highways and main roads, says Mining and Pastoral MLC Wendy Duncan.
Funds totaling $1 million will be spent on a 14km section of the sealed road, starting 40 km west of Coolgardie, and will see it being widened to 8m, with a 0.5m shoulder.
Mrs Duncan said that she had received many complaints about the condition of certain sections of the highway, and that the works were a start towards resolving safety concerns expressed by constituents.
“The highway is a major arterial route connecting Western Australia to the rest of Australia and the Goldfields to much of the State.
“As such it handles a great deal of traffic, much of which is heavy haulage transport. It is certainly in need of regular maintenance and improvement work to keep it safe for all drivers.”
Transport Minister Troy Buswell said work on the Great-Eastern Highway was part of a package of State Government funded projects with a total value of $35 million, all aimed at making the State’s roads safer.
Of the 31 projects, 28 are located in regional areas.
