A rising star of greyhound racing in Western Australia is racking up wins for charities including the Centre for Cerebral Palsy.
Brilliant local greyhound Miata is already shaping as one of the fastest dogs in the land and Racing and Gaming Minister Terry Waldron said her efforts highlighted not only her potential but also her worth to charity organisations.
Greyhounds WA has a reputation for its community spirit and is the home of Cannington Bingo which has raised more than $1million for Combined Charities WA since 2002.
Mr Waldron said the Centre for Cerebral Palsy was a major beneficiary of the greyhound industry’s fundraising efforts and Miata through her wins had already provided $10,000 to assist persons with cerebral palsy.
“This follows Miata’s latest victory at Cannington on August 11 when she earned the centre a bonus $5,000 for winning her race and a further $5,000 for breaking her own track record,” the Minister said.
“Miata has established a class record at each of her public appearances including breaking the Cannington 530m track record at each her last two starts.
“She is trained by Paul Stuart, the greyhound industry’s Young Achiever of the Year, and someone who has driven a number of charity initiatives that have accompanied Miata’s short career.
“Miata races again tonight and Greyhounds WA will donate a further $500 for each length of her winning margin.
“Let’s hope that Miata can maintain her average winning margin of more than 11 lengths for the sake of this extremely worthwhile charity.”
