The defeat of two Bills in the Federal Parliament that would end the live export trade has been welcomed by Member for Mining and Pastoral Hon Wendy Duncan MLC.
The Live Animal Export Restriction and Prohibition Bill and the Live Animal Export (Slaughter) Prohibition Bill were tabled yesterday.
Ms Duncan said this outcome indicated that the majority of Australians had come to their senses about the live export trade and its importance, not only to Australia but to our important near neighbours such as Indonesia.
“The concern around the trade does not end with this decision by the Federal Parliament. We must remain vigilant about maintaining the live export industry which is the sole source of income for many of our northern producers and underpins livestock prices throughout Australia,” Ms Duncan said.
“No amount of money will resolve animal welfare problems in the world overnight, but we must make every effort to continue to see improvements and ensure Australian animals go into systems where their welfare can be guaranteed.”
