Lands Minister Brendon Grylls will tomorrow open the 7th International Symposium on Digital Earth in Perth.
The event - behind held for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere - brings together about 700 delegates from more than 15 countries and more than 100 speakers from China, Europe, the United States, Japan, Brazil, Iran, Korea, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Grylls said the symposium would highlight the critical role of location information in decision-making around the world.
“This technology has become part of our everyday lives. Nearly everyone carries a GPS in the form of their mobile, smart phones and iPads; and that has opened a huge range of new opportunities,” he said.
“The challenge is to use this technology to help us make sense of the flood of location-based information now available.
“The program for this conference looks at many examples of how location information is being applied around the world; and I’m pleased to note the attention given to practical, yet innovative, ways we can address economic and social development, disaster mitigation and natural resource management.”
The conference runs from August 23-25 and features presentations on the use of Digital Earth technology to manage major international projects and events. These include the Three Gorges Dam project and the response to the Great East Japan earthquake and Tsunami disaster; and will establish new international partnerships in the development of this technology.
