Premier Colin Barnett was in Albany today to announce extra funding for the Albany Surf Life Saving Club through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.

The surf life saving club originally received $650,000 for its $1.36million project to extend the clubrooms and has today received a further $337,226 taking the total to just under $1million.

This money has helped the club build a second storey on the clubhouse which includes an education zone, new kitchen, ablutions and an information and technology area.

Mr Barnett said surf lifesaving volunteers throughout Western Australia performed an invaluable service to beachgoers and the Albany community will greatly benefit from the improved premises which include a second storey extension to provide education and training rooms; storage; and toilet facilities.

“The club has a thriving junior membership and with room for extra training and certification courses, it will be great to see more junior lifesavers coming out of the club,” the Premier said.

“Programs at this club, like so many in the State, provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for beach users.

“Middleton Beach is immensely popular and the volunteers at the Albany Surf Life Saving Club do a great job.

“The improved facilities funded today are going to support those activities as well as boost the club’s ability to host surf-related events in Albany.”

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the surf club had outgrown the present building and upgrading the facilities had been planned for several years.

“Royalties for Regions funding was the perfect conduit for the surf club which relies on volunteers, public donations and local government to provide for the safety of beach goers at Middleton Beach in Albany,” Mr Grylls said.

“Royalties for Regions will not only help to build a new clubroom, but also provide a facility that will deliver a valuable service to locals and tourists to the region.”
