Contract for temporary Kununurra courthouse, Grylls

The State Government has awarded a contract for the building of a temporary courthouse in Kununurra so the Kimberley town’s existing courthouse can be demolished to make room for a new facility in 2014.
Attorney General Christian Porter and Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls announced the $3.8million contract would go to Quality Builders Pty Ltd, a company specialising in transportable building construction for the Western Australian market.
The temporary courthouse would be located in the grounds of the local hospital off Ivanhoe Road for up to two years from September next year and will operate with regular court security measures.
“The project team and architects are working closely with the Kununurra community, including the shire, police, legal, business and Aboriginal communities to significantly advance the design of the new $40million Kununurra courthouse,” Mr Porter said.
“An inspiring concept that captures the distinct landscape of the Kimberley region is being developed, to fit on its current location, at the corner of Coolibah Drive and Messmate Way next to the police station.”
Building of the permanent new facility is due to start late next year and finish in 2014.
Mr Grylls said the project was being funded by Royalties for Regions as part a program to improve infrastructure in the East Kimberley.
Quality Builders has built more than 1,200 transportable buildings ranging from police stations to classrooms throughout the State over the past two decades.
The contract was awarded by the Building Management and Works division of the Department of Finance
