An injection of $91,000 from the Royalties for Regions Regional Grants Scheme will provide much needed capital for the Goldfields’ Women’s Health Care Centre (GWHCC) to renovate and repair its premises at 15 Dugan Street, Kalgoorlie.
Member for Mining and Pastoral, Hon Wendy Duncan MLC, has welcomed the funding saying that it will ensure the beautiful old Goldfields building will serve the community well into the future.
“I visited the Centre earlier this year and saw the collapsed ceiling and damage that resulted from a heavy rain event. The old building needs the roof re-pitched and this will allow for further renovations and expansion of the excellent services provided to Goldfields women,” Ms Duncan said.
Renovations will also include restumping to fix the uneven floors and airconditioning to make the building comfortable all year round.
“GWHCC provides a vast range of services to Goldfields women including sexual health, ante and post natal care, cancer screening and mental health support. There is a particular focus on the needs of Aboriginal women. They do an excellent job and it is great news that their future is assured.”
Ms Duncan said that, due to the great community spirit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the GWHCC owns the old building and provides services for many State and Federal government agencies, many of them with the assistance of volunteers.
The 2010-2011 round of Regional Grants Scheme has funded 15 projects with $744,919 in the Goldfields Esperance region. The total value of the projects funded is over two million dollars which demonstrates the value of Royalties for Regions in attracting additional funds to the region.
