Broome’s premier cultural, arts and community festival, Shinju Matsuri, has received a significant funding boost thanks to the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Program.
The Hon Wendy Duncan MLC, Member for Mining and Pastoral Region, said that $90,000 of Royalties for Regions funding had been allocated to the Shinju Matsuri Festival this year, allowing for the committee to expand and enhance the program.
An agreement between the tourism Minister, Dr Kim Hames and Minister for Regional Development, Hon Brendon Grylls, paved the way for Royalties for Regions funding to be used for tourism events and projects throughout the State.
“The community festival is a major event on the Broome calendar, and the Royalties for Regions funding would have significant benefit in adding to a pool of cultural activities, whilst increasing the marketing and promotion of the festival in WA and nationally.” said Ms Duncan.
The Shinju Matsuri Festival, which celebrates Broome’s multicultural pearling history, has been a part of Broome’s essence for more than 40 years.
“The significant contributions that many cultures played in forming the foundation of the pearling industry in Broome are the core of the festival’s roots.”
“It is wonderful to see the spirit of the pearling industry being celebrated through such a significant regional event, which provides cultural and social benefits to the community along with increasing the region’s profile.” said Ms Duncan.
Ms Duncan will be in Broome to celebrate some of the festivities during the course of the festival which runs from Saturday 10th September until Sunday 18th September.
“I look forward to sharing and celebrating this unique festival with the community of
Broome, and encourage everyone who is in Broome during Shinju Matsuri to become a part
of the festivities.”
