Dwellingup is set to host one of Western Australia’s most popular mountain bike events this weekend.
Acting Tourism Minister John Day said the Dwellingup 100 MTB Classic, now in its third year, was expected to attract more than 900 competitors of all ages.
“Participants can compete in a 100km or 40km race, or ride in a 14km mass participation event,” Mr Day said.
“About 2,000 spectators are expected to watch the event, which is set against extraordinary backdrops of towering jarrah forests and spectacular river views.”
The Dwellingup 100 MTB Classic is funded by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Scheme.
“Regional events are important as they provide significant economic, social and cultural benefits to the community, as well as increase the region’s profile through media exposure,” Mr Day said.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the funding for the Regional Events Scheme was doubled to $600,000 in 2011-12, which was part of a significant $40million over four years to regional events from the Royalties for Regions program.
“When Dwellingup hosts the mountain bike classic, the community comes alive with many new visitors coming for the race. It is events like these that make a town an exciting and vibrant place to visit, as well as a great place to live,” Mr Grylls said.
“Providing Royalties for Regions funding for regional events like this is a great way to showcase WA’s exceptional regional towns.”
