Davies addresses Mid West Women in Business meeting

Author: Mia Davies
Published on: 13-September-2011

Member for the Agricultural Region Mia Davies today addressed the Mid West Small Business Centre’s ‘Women in Business Breakfast’ event in Geraldton.

Ms Davies spoke about the important role women have played in regional communities throughout history and the important role they continue to play today.

“2011 marks the Centenary of International Women’s Day, so it’s a good chance to reflect on the great work of women across regional WA,” Ms Davies said.

“Women played an important role in the development of regional communities across the State, from a social and business perspective.

“Just like their pioneering predecessors, contemporary women are responsible for much of the innovation that makes regional WA such a great place to live and work.”

More than 40 business women and community leaders from Geraldton and the Mid West attended the breakfast.

Ms Davies spoke about her path to becoming a Member of Parliament, her influences and the issues that underpinned her approach to representing the Agricultural Region.

“I am particularly conscious of the things that enable women to contribute to their community and participate in the workforce,” Ms Davies said.

“For example, we have some wonderfully talented and experienced women living in regional WA who are unable to work or contribute to their community because they do not have access to childcare.

“The issue of aged care, particularly as women are typically the primary carers for ageing parents, is also of concern.”

She also spoke about access to quality healthcare and education as potential deal-breakers for families looking to live or work in the regions.

“I see Government’s role as getting the fundamentals right so that women can bring innovation, tenacity and a unique country spirit to business and projects that will allow regional WA to grow and prosper.”
