Geraldton’s community will shine next weekend at the annual Geraldton Greenough Sunshine Festival, which opens on October 7.

The State Government has provided funding for the festival through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Scheme, which this year received a funding boost from Royalties for Regions.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said that for the past 53 years, the festival had celebrated Geraldton’s unique and diverse lifestyle.

“The festival not only attracts about 15,000 visitors, it also develops a sense of community pride and adds vibrancy to the region,” Dr Hames said.

“Regional events are important as they provide significant economic, social and cultural benefits to the community, as well as increase the region’s profile through media exposure.”

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the funding for the Regional Events Scheme was part of a significant four-year commitment of $40million to regional events from the Royalties for Regions Fund.

“The Sunshine Festival celebrates Geraldton and its surrounding communities, and it is events like these that make the city an exciting and vibrant place to visit, as well as a great place to live,” Mr Grylls said.

“Royalties for Regions funding ensures regional events such as the sunshine festival continue to engage and excite both visitors and communities in regional WA.”

The festival has something for everyone such as a street parade; sand sculpture and guitar hero competitions; Home Grown Music Festival; Midwest Food Fest; car display; truck pulling; great waiters’ race; and much more.
