More land in Karratha for residential development, Grylls

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls today announced that seven parcels of Crown land in Karratha are being made available to the private market for residential development.

Mr Grylls said that the lands had been identified through the Lazy Lands residential infill project which is run by the Pilbara Cities Office to identify underutilised or surplus Crown land that could be put on the market for housing.

The Department of Regional Development and Lands will call for expressions of interest for the development of the seven parcels later this month.

“Providing access to housing is such an integral element of the Royalties for Regions’ Pilbara Cities project, and these Lazy Lands will play a significant role in meeting the Pilbara’s land needs to 2015,” he said.

“The seven parcels of land add up to more than 3.2 hectares of land, and new developments on this land will help enhance older suburbs and attract more developers to the region.”

The Minister said that a total of 61 parcels of land had been identified through the Lazy Lands project and would be delivered in three stages.

“Stage One will see the release of easily developable parcels, while Stages Two and Three will involve parcels where more work is required to create easements, understand drainage and flooding issues, or obtain Native Title clearance,” Mr Grylls said.

“With expansions in the resource sector drawing workers to the region and leading to housing shortages, the Lazy Lands project is essential, and will also be run in South and Port Hedland, Newman and Tom Price.

“We want families to settle in the Pilbara on a permanent basis, and enjoy the same quality housing options, amenities and facilities provided in any other major Australian city.”
