Sporting clubs in the Pilbara have gained a powerful new supporter as a result of a unique joint initiative between the State Government, the Shire of Roebourne and Rio Tinto to fund a Club Development Officer (CDO) position.
Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the CDO would fill an important need in the shire, providing critical assistance to all community sport and recreation groups, especially in Karratha and the satellite towns of Roebourne, Dampier and Wickham.
“One of the priorities of the CDOs is to work with local sporting and recreation groups and associations to assist their club volunteers to develop into more efficient organisations,” Mr Waldron said.
“Things like assisting with member retention, accessing funding and training, developing club members and increasing volunteers can prove invaluable for clubs.”
The Minister said the CDO would also be responsible for developing contacts and networks with local sport and recreation groups and associations. The officer would liaise regularly with the clubs and other stakeholders to ensure the community was aware of sport and recreation opportunities that existed in their regions.
Mr Waldron praised the shire and Rio Tinto for coming on board and contributing funding for the position.
“The increased cost of living in the Pilbara region meant that a joint investment by the State Government, the Shire of Roebourne and Rio Tinto was the only way this position could operate,” he said
