Albany residents, community organisations and service groups united on Tuesday, October 25, to raise funds to support those affected by breast cancer.

Community members helped to raise more than $400 at a Pink Ribbon breakfast on Tuesday morning, hosted by Nationals WA Member for O’Connor Tony Crook MP.

Nationals WA Member for the South West, Colin Holt also attended, along with staff from many local service organisations including Centrelink and the Great Southern Development Commission.

Staff from Mr Crook’s office worked hard to prepare home-made biscuits and cakes, which were sold throughout the morning to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Mr Crook said he was pleased to see the Albany community come together and support such a worthy cause.

“A Pink Ribbon breakfast is a great way to get together with friends and raise much needed funds for breast cancer research,” Mr Crook said.

The Breakfast was held in honour of Kylie Cook, a woman with close links to Albany, and is currently battling with breast cancer.

A mother of three, Mrs Cook was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 46, and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Mrs Cook encouraged all women to conduct regular self examinations.

“You will feel it and you will know it’s not right. If your cancer is found early, there is no reason you can’t beat it.”

Mrs Cook thanked all those in attendance, and everyone contributing to Pink Ribbon Breakfasts across Australia.

“It’s the money poured into research that has helped advance treatment, so the Pink Ribbon Breakfast makes a huge difference to those with breast cancer,” Mrs Cook said.

More than 1 in 9 women in Australia is diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85.

“In fact, this year alone, 12,700 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer,” Mr Crook said.

“Working together we can make a difference, providing support and hope to all those affected by breast cancer.”

A fundraising initiative from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Pink Ribbon Breakfasts raised over $2 million in 2010 - and aim to exceed this amount in 2011 to fund even more research projects for the prevention and cure of breast cancer.
