Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies yesterday gave the keynote address at the 'Lipstick in the Limelight' - Wagin Women's Forum, organised by the Wagin Woodanilling Landcare Zone.

Ms Davies spoke about the key role women play in promoting and maintaining vibrant regional communities, both today and throughout history.

“Women in regional WA continue to make exceptional contributions to their communities,” Ms Davies said.

“Just like their pioneering predecessors, contemporary women are responsible for much of the innovation that makes regional WA such a great place to live and work.”

“2011 marks the Centenary of International Women’s Day, so it’s a good chance to reflect on the great work of women across regional WA.”

Ms Davies said as the only female representing the Agricultural Region in State Parliament, she is particularly conscious of the things that enable women to contribute to their community and participate in the workforce.

“Childcare and aged care are essential – we have some wonderfully talented and experienced women living in regional WA who are unable to work or get involved in the community because they don’t have access to childcare or adequate aged care.”

She also spoke about access to quality health care and education as key factors in attracting families to live or work in the regions.

“I see government’s role as getting the fundamentals right so women can bring their unique skills to the businesses and projects that will allow regional WA to grow and prosper.”

Speakers at the event included musician and local biodynamic farmer, Kelly Newton-Wordsworth; artist Jodie Ditchburn; local icon and former Country Party Member of Parliament, Win Piesse; CWA spokesperson, Sue McDougall; Wagin Woodanilling Landcare Zone Manager, Danielle Perrie; and author, Fiona Palmer.

A large group of women from Wagin and surrounding areas attended the third biannual forum. Ms Davies congratulated organizers on a great event.
