Member for the Central Wheatbelt, Brendon Grylls and Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies have congratulated all artists involved with the 2011 Wheatbelt Art Prize, presented on Friday 21 October.

Mr Grylls said the quality of works on display was a great reflection of the creativity, talent and enthusiasm of all artists involved.

“Every year this exhibition seems to get better and better, with some really outstanding entries,” Mr Grylls said.

“It was great to see so many local artists getting involved and taking out these awards.”

Ms Davies congratulated the Merredin Fine Arts Society on the successful exhibition.

“Events such as this, which recognize and celebrate the importance arts have in regional communities, are extremely important,” Ms Davies said.

“Arts play a significant and often underestimated role in maintaining vibrant, well-balanced regional communities.”

The Wheatbelt Art Prize competition was open to all artists residing in the Wheatbelt, amateur or professional, aged over 15 years. This year, Nellie Crees of Merredin won the $1500 Wheatbelt Art Prize for her work ‘Towards the Cliff Face’.

Ms Davies and Mr Grylls sponsored the Wheatbelt Art Prize. Other awards were sponsored by the Shire of Merredin, Collgar Wind Farm, Vestas, Catalpa Resources and Jarluke Developments.
