The State Government has selected Serco Australia Pty Ltd as the preferred tenderer for the new Young Adults Facility.
The facility, the first of its kind in Western Australia, will accommodate up to 80 male offenders aged 18-24 years at what is currently the Rangeview Juvenile Remand Centre in Murdoch.
Corrective Services Minister Terry Redman said the centre would focus on helping young men who wanted to turn their lives around, by providing education, training and employment opportunities.
The operation and maintenance of the facility was tendered after it was determined that private operators could bring a wealth of specific experience and innovation to the initiative.
“An extensive evaluation was undertaken to assess Serco’s tender against the standards set by the Government,” Mr Redman said.
The Department of Corrective Services and Serco will now enter a due diligence and contract negotiation phase. If successful, a contract is scheduled to be in place by February 2012 and the facility will start accepting offenders after being commissioned.
The performance of the operator will be closely monitored by the department and the independent Inspector of Custodial Services to ensure standards are met.
The selection of Serco as the preferred respondent is the culmination of more than two years of extensive work on the Young Adults Facility.
