Teaching and promoting healthy lifestyles to indigenous children and their families by the Healthy Kids Week Project run by the Hedland Health Campus in South Hedland has seen them awarded a high commendation in this year’s Children’s Week Awards.
Wendy Duncan, Member for Mining and Pastoral Region said that the Awards, run by the Department for Communities, celebrate the outstanding children’s services and projects that improve the opportunities for Western Australian children.
The Highly Commended Healthy Kids Week project delivers the mobile healthy lifestyles program to many indigenous communities in the East Pilbara. The program incorporates a number of play based activity stations which provide the opportunity for health practitioners to engage families. Its focus is on healthy lifestyles, oral, ear and skin health, speech and language, physical activity and growth and nutrition.
Ms Duncan said that the project was inspirational and offered indigenous children living in extremely remote communities a chance to learn about the importance of healthy lifestyles in an engaging manner.
“I would like to congratulate the team behind the Healthy Kids Week project for the remarkable efforts to ensure that the message about healthy lifestyles is reaching our indigenous children” said Ms Duncan.
“With the focus on a variety of health issues, the long term benefits of the Healthy Kids Week project will no doubt be a beneficial step towards a better understanding of healthy lifestyles.”
The project also offered the opportunity to health professionals to identify children who might need follow-up services.  This 'health road-show' was deemed to be a huge success and will continue as an annual event in the future.
