The Black Swan State Theatre Company and the West Australian Opera Company are set to receive more than $330,000 from the State Government’s 2012 Major Performing Arts Companies Regional Touring Program.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls and Culture and the Arts Minister John Day announced the regional touring grant which would be delivered to eight regions to enjoy 14 public performances and 16 community workshops in Black Swan’s world-premiere of Tim Winton’s second play Signs of Life.

“The West Australian Opera Company will tour the Kimberley, with its full 32-member WA Opera Chorus delivering four public and seven school performances, 11 school workshops and three in-school residencies,” Mr Day said.

“WA-produced shows are a key part of our State’s cultural identity and it is great news that people living in the regions can attend these live performances.”

Mr Grylls said the departments of Regional Development; Lands; and Culture and the Arts had been working collaboratively to ensure opportunities for large-scale performances were available to regional communities.

“Under a new four-year agreement signed recently, $1.4million will be allocated to enable WA’s major performing arts companies to hold public performances and school-based workshops in regional communities,” Mr Grylls said.

“As well, $1million funding has been allocated from the Department for Regional Development and Lands Regional Investment Fund, and $400,000 from the Department of Culture and the Arts over the four years.”
