Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies visited Primary Schools in Merredin and Kellerberrin today to view artworks produced by students for her annual Christmas Art competition.
Ms Davies invites selected schools each year to nominate a class to produce pictures representing Christmas in the Wheatbelt, with the winning pictures used for her Christmas cards.
“This is a great way of getting to meet students and see their outstanding work, while also enjoying and showcasing their distinctive depictions of Christmas in the Wheatbelt,” Ms Davies said.
“I invite a number of schools to participate and after visiting the schools and seeing the artworks; a winning picture from each class will be selected for my Christmas cards.
“It’s a bit of fun for the students and a big thrill for the winner, who gets their picture sent on a Christmas card to hundreds of people.”
The Year 7 class at Kellerberrin, Year 3-4 class at South Merredin and Years 5 to 7 classes at North Merredin displayed their works today.
Ms Davies visited these classes and said it was great to hear from the students about why Christmas is special to them.
“Each of the students has a unique take on Christmas and it was fantastic to hear more about what inspired their pictures.
“The pictures ranged from images of harvest, to kangaroos helping out Father Christmas, to the traditional Christmas tree and gifts.
“All pictures are of such a high standard it is a very tough job choosing the winners.”
Last year Jeneva Gors from Beverley District High School, aged 9, won the Christmas card competition with her drawing of Father Christmas flying over a farmer and dog in a ute.
This year a winner from each class will be selected for four different Christmas card designs.
