Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies has congratulated State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers on the outstanding contribution they make to regional communities.

Speaking in Parliament last night to mark Nationals SES Week, Ms Davies said Emergency Service volunteers go above and beyond to provide vital, life-saving services, especially in regional areas.

“National SES Week is a great occasion to say thank you to the volunteers who contribute their time to make our communities safer and give us peace of mind,” Ms Davies said.

“I will be wearing an orange ribbon today as a small recognition of the hard work and dedication of nearly 2,000 SES volunteers in WA.”

Ms Davies said communities in the Agricultural Region depended on the efforts of volunteers.

“In regional WA, we are heavily reliant on volunteers for all our emergency services, including the Fire and Rescue Service of Western Australia, the State Emergency Service, St John Ambulance and the Volunteer Marine Rescue Services.

“The services that these organisations provide exist because people are willing to donate their time to train people, to be trained, to fundraise and to organise and support those who are involved.

“While providing vital services, volunteers are rewarded with the challenges, sense of community and new skills that come with getting involved and volunteering.”

Ms Davies spoke about the Kalbarri SES and the Kellerberrin Junior Fire Brigade as examples of the dedication and commitment volunteers in the agricultural region.

“The Kalbarri SES team has made the finals for the State SES Awards, a great honour and one very well deserved.

“I wish them the best of luck for Saturday, when the winners will be announced.”

National SES Week runs from 7-13 November 2011, with a special showcase today to launch ‘Wear Orange Wednesday’.
