Spice up your life at Seniors Expo, Duncan

The ageing process can be both challenging and fulfilling however with access to good services like those on show at the Esperance Seniors Expo, we can age successfully according to Member for Mining and Pastoral Wendy Duncan MLC.

Ms Duncan said population demographics were showing that we have an ageing population with people living longer.  According to Nationals Seniors Australia, more than one third of the rural Australian population is 65 years of age and older (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), 2007). While urban and rural areas both have ageing populations, older populations were growing at a faster rate in rural areas than in metropolitan centres. This would have a significant effect on the way rural communities operate in the future.
“We must meet the challenges of catering for an ageing population. Attractive seaside towns like Esperance entice a high number of retirees and we must provide them with services and opportunities that not only make them feel safe and secure, but also keep them active and productive,” Ms Duncan said.
Ms Duncan said the Seniors Expo would be an invaluable showcase of the town’s community groups, service providers and businesses for seniors and their families and friends to discover.
“Seniors are by far the biggest contributors to our volunteer workforce and they are also a very important part of the local economy. The Seniors Expo is a great way to put them front and centre for the day so we don’t forget them during the year.”

The Seniors Expo is on Saturday November 12 from 10am to 4pm at the Indoor Sports Stadium (Esperance Showground).
